 Sonic Flavor is a new show taking a magnifying glass to food and its preparation, processing and production. Each episode will feature a simple recipe highlighting a particular food. We’ll take you through the steps to make the food yourself and invite you to comment with your versions of the featured recipe. In addition to the recipe there will be short segments of interviews with chefs, cookbook authors, and other food experts telling us more about what we’re eating.

Our first show features a very simple, very delicious ingredient: the egg. The recipe we’re presenting in this episode is what we call Eggs in a Basket, but, depending on who you ask, it’s Birds in a Nest or Eggs on a Raft or any other variation of egg in toast. Whatever you call it, we take you through the simple steps of making it yourself. We’ll also hear from James Beard-nominated cookbook author Jennifer Trainer Thompson where tells us about her love for raising chickens in her backyard and what egg makes the best ingredient. Last, we talk to a Bloomington local selling fresh eggs and explaining why everyone should be eating farm-fresh eggs.

For many students, high school and college years are a time for experimentation. For this Memory Byte, a young woman talks to us about her lack of memory—the blackout, and night she could have lost her life.

ASR has a policy to always name sources, except in cases where sources may face legal jeopardy or loss of livelihood. The young woman who told this story did not want to be named for fear of losing her chance to go to medical school. We decided to honor our source’s decision to only speak “off the record”, because her story is relevant and familiar to so many young high school and college students today.
