The Blackout

blackoutFor many students, high school and college years are a time for experimentation. For this Memory Byte, a young woman talks to us about her lack of memory—the blackout, and night she could have lost her life.

ASR has a policy to always name sources, except in cases where sources may face legal jeopardy or loss of livelihood. The young woman who told this story did not want to be named for fear of losing her chance to go to medical school. We decided to honor our source’s decision to only speak “off the record”, because her story is relevant and familiar to so many young high school and college students today.

This piece was reported & produced by Leah Johnson, edited by Lauren Glapa, with final production assistance from Jacqui Doyle.

People love dogs, but unfortunately some landlords aren’t big fans of the furry canines. Mogley was as lovely as any dog, but when the landlord’s wishes are taken as a joke and not respected, the house where Mogley called home had to deal with the consequences. This piece was reported by Tyler Wright and produced by ASR’s Bari Finkel.

Don and Breeze Sobek live in rural Bufkin, Indiana, where it will take you 20 minutes or more to drive to the grocery for milk but you’re more likely to be getting it from a neighbor’s cows or goats anyway. Welcome to the Sobek’s kitchen, where Don recounts some ups and downs to their early courtship—including the death of a beloved pet dog and some twists and turns in real estate.

The couple met in Puerto Rico in the 70s, and Don and Breeze lived abroad for years before moving back home to Indiana to renovate the cabin that Breeze’s grandmother grew up in. That is where they currently make their home, along with their horses, chickens, two French poodles, and thirteen cats.
